A Book Club Discussion

2021 Book Club: Exploring Genre

Looking to make friends and practice critical reading skills this summer? Are you interested in expanding your understanding of social justice issues and engaging with the diversity in your community?

Enact Our Dreams is continuing its popular “Diversity in America” virtual book club for its second year. This summer, we’re focusing on discovering diversity through the lens of story. We’ll read four books—each from a different genre—and explore how the form and content contribute to each author’s message.

The book club will meet every week to read and discuss various works by contemporary authors. When applying to universities, it is always helpful to provide a personal reading list which demonstrates an applicant's well-roundedness. The purpose of this club is to expand that personal reading list.  Additionally, you will have an opportunity to contribute to the book club blog by writing your opinions, reflections, and analysis of books we've read. This is a great platform to publish your thoughts and opinions as you learn to write well. Finally, students will complete the book club with an interview project to practice their acquired listening skills in real life.
“The book club was very enjoyable and I think I enjoyed the discussions the most since during each discussion, everyone was able to make a lot of real life connections and thoughtful analysis as we were reading each book. “

About you instructor
Katie Simpson

Ms. Katherine Simpson graduated Summa Cum Laude from Gordon College with a double degree in Political Science and English literature. Her writing has been published by NPR stations across the United States. Currently, she works at KALW in San Francisco. Ms. Simpson’s research and writing includes reporting on Indianapolis’ city government and a thesis on Toni Morrison. She strives to imbue a curiosity and empathy in her students. Whether she’s teaching literature or helping students revise their own writing, she hopes that her students will not only grow as learners but as people.
